ORICON: Demon Slayer 1st Manga Series to Have Three 5 Million Selling Volumes in Japan

As the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train anime film continues chugging along and breaking all the box office records in Japan (and other south-east Asian areas), the manga arc that first told the adapted story is also doing well, with the seventh and eighth volumes of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga series breaking the 5 million copies physically sold mark over the last week in Japan.

 

This comes a week after the first volume of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba also broke the 5 million copy sold barrier. Oricon, who reported the news and tracks physical sales of manga in Japan, says that this is the first time in the history of its reporting that a manga series has had three volumes selling over 5 million copies. Oricon has been tracking the market since 2008. 

 

The first volume of Demon Slayer has sold 5,029,000 copies, while volume 7 has sold 5,009,000 copies with volume 8 selling 5,030,000 copies, both containing the Mugen Train arc in the 23 volume manga series. Remember, these are only the physical manga volumes, Oricon does not track digital sales of the manga. Overall, Demon Slayer has 120 million copies released and sold, which includes the digital version.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has spawned a TV anime series and an anime film, which opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The film is scheduled to be released in the west in early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired.
