Japan Box Office: Mamoru Hosoda's MIRAI Shows 28% Drop in Its 2nd Weekend
Probably due to mostly mixed reviews by critics and audience, Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars)'s latest feature film Mirai no Mirai/Mirai of The Future/MIRAI earned a modest 289 million yen on 215,000 admissions in the weekend of July 28-29, which was 28% down from its opening weekend gross.
Back in July 2015, his previous film Bakemono no Ko/The Boy and the Beast already made 1.9 billion yen from its first two-week run, about as twice as that of MIRAI. Judging from its misfired two-weekend results, it can be forecast that MIRAI would end its domestic run with about 2-2.5 billion yen, less than half of The Boy and the Beast's total domestic gross of 5.85 billion yen.
Meanwhile, Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer finally goes out of top 10 for the first time in its 16th
weekend, but still holding its 11th place. The 22nd Conan feature film has earned a massive 8.58 billion
yen in Japan, and has already become not only the top-grossing film in the 22-year old Conan anime
franchise but also the 9th top-grossing Japanese animation film of all-time.
