Death Stranding Film Adaptation in the Works

Death Stranding

As if the recently-announced Death Stranding 2 wasn't enough heavy-lifting for us all, there's now going to be a feature film based on the game from Kojima Productions. Hideo Kojima's studio is teaming up with Barbarian executive producer Alex Lebovici's Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce the adaptation.

Kojima and Lebovici are producing the film, which is being fully financed by Hammerstone and has Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar on board as executive producers.

While there isn't much to go on in terms of the adaptation's story, Deadline reports that it will include new elements and characters. Development is underway and the project is being fast tracked, but no director or writer has been announced at the time of this writing.

Here's what Kojima had to say about the project: “I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios … This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing DEATH STRANDING to the big screen.”

Lebovici emphasized how excited they are to team up with Kojima on his first film adaptation, adding that this will be "far more intimate and grounded" than your average tentpole video game adaptation, and will be "an authentic 'Hideo Kojima' production."

The first Death Stranding game launched on PlayStation 4 in 2019 before being ported to PC in July 2020 and PlayStation 5 in September 2021. It's also available in a Director's Cut version, which the Steam page describes like so:

In the future, a mysterious event known as the Death Stranding has opened a doorway between the living and the dead, leading to grotesque creatures from the afterlife roaming the fallen world marred by a desolate society.

As Sam Bridges, your mission is to deliver hope to humanity by connecting the last survivors of a decimated America.

Can you reunite the shattered world, one step at a time?
