Japan Box Office: Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet Repeats at No.1 with 774 Million Yen
As expected, the Detective Conan anime franchise's 24th feature film Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan / Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet stayed at No.1 for two consecutive weeks, making a huge 774 million yen (7.1 million USD) on 549,000 admissions in its second weekend.
The film's second-weekend gross was 54 percent down from the first, but considering the fact many theaters in the four prefectures of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo have been closed since Sunday due to the third declaration of a state of emergency, this was a pretty good result. The 110-minute film has so far made 3.9 billion yen (35.8 million USD) with 2.74 million ticket sales. Whether or not it will become the biggest hit of the franchise, as was expected beforehand, will depend on the future infection status of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan.
Coming in second was Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, the first part of the two-part "Final Chapter" live-action film series inspired by Nobuhiro Watsuki's action jidaigeki manga series Rurouni Kenshin. The 138-minute film based on the manga's final "Jinchu" arc earned 528 million yen (4.84 million USD) on 362,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday, and 700 million yen (6.42 million USD) on 510,000 admissions in its first three days. The live-action film series' previous installment Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, released in September 2014, made 1.3 billion yen (12 million USD) in its first three days and dominated Japan's weekend box office ranking for four consecutive weeks.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time dropped to third place in its seventh weekend. The cumulative box office gross of the film has finally surpassed the eight billion yen (73.46 million USD) mark by selling 5.23 million tickets. However, with the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout Japan, it is unlikely to reach the ten billion yen milestone.
BanG Dream! Episode of Roselia I: Yakusoku (Promise), the first part of the all-new two-part film series focusing on Roselia from the BanG Dream! multimedia franchise, was released in 70 theaters across Japan on April 23, then made its impressive fifth-place debut. The second part BanG Dream! Episode of Roselia Ⅱ : Song I am. is set to be released in Japan on June 25, 2021.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train has stayed at the weekend box office top 10 for an amazing 28 consecutive weeks. The film has earned 39.78 billion yen (365 million USD).
