Universal Studios Japan Starts Monkeying Around With Donkey Kong Expansion in 2024
Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan finally opened its doors earlier this year after a normal delay and then a COVID one, giving those willing to brave a theme park during a pandemic the experience of being inside a Super Mario video game. Yesterday, the theme park and Nintendo jointly announced that the world will be expanding, with an area based on Donkey Kong coming to the park in 2014.
The Donkey Kong area will be based on the more common Kong, the one with the tie and not the one from the original Mario Bros. games, who is actually the father of the tie version and is currently christened Cranky Kong – though I'm sure the park will have references to the original games like Super Mario Odyssey did. USJ states that the new area will have "a roller coaster, interactive experiences, themed merchandise and food," though the food will likely all be banana-themed.
The new Donkey Kong area will increase the size of Super Nintendo Land by 70% and comes from the mind of Shigeru Miyamoto and the team at USJ. It is set to open in 2024 right next to the Super Mario area, so in theory, shouldn't be hard to miss!
