PHOTOS: 28 Days of Black Cosplay Reflects on the Anime of 2022
2022 was a year packed full of fantastic anime that I may or may not have finished (I haven’t, I’m sorry to my watchlist). With that in mind, we've decided to combine #28DaysOfBlackCosplay with the anime of 2022, featuring cosplayers dressed from their favorites of last year. That's not all, though, as we've also asked them the hardest question we could think of: why was this your favorite anime?
With series like Chainsaw Man, more My Hero Academia and the highly anticipated return of Bleach there was a LOT to choose from so, just like last week, we’re splitting this into two features! Be sure to check back later to see even more amazing cosplay!

Queen E Cosplays as Shinobu Kocho (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Her look is gorgeous and she stood out to me in season one.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The fact that I was able to use my locs instead of a wig and having a sword as a prop (note: be sure to check out the full photo set).
Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
The animation was gorgeous, especially with Tengen fighting Gyutaro.
Where can everyone follow your work?
Phy as Yoruichi (Bleach)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
The announcement of Bleach's return after a decade away was like a dream!! Yoruichi is one of my favorite characters and I wanted to show my excitement and love for the character and anime through cosplay.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I really love the editing job I did. I'm still learning and practicing but I was very proud of the end result.
Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
Bleach hit the ground running; it was almost as if no time had passed. The animation, writing, pacing and music were all amazing. I also loved how they played on nostalgia by bringing one of the original songs, "Number One," back!

Lilly Hawkins as Tengen Uzui (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Uzui is one of my favorite characters from the Entertainment District Arc of Demon Slayer. I love his style and I wanted to emulate it in my own way!
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The makeup and the details of the cosplay, I went through the process of distressing the diamond fishnets and it really brought the whole look together (note: be sure to check out the full photo set).
Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
Demon Slayer was one of my favorite manga reads in 2021 and watching this arc get animated surpassed my imagination. The animation was beautiful to me and I loved watching the manga come to life.
Where can everyone follow your work?
JayLeeTrey as Shunsui Kyoraku (Bleach)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
The love and passion for Bleach as a series and the love I have for Shunsui. He’s so chill but looks sooooo cool in his outfits. He stands out, and I do the same with how I dress. I relate to Shunsui a lot!
What's something you love about this cosplay?

Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
Bleach has been one of my favorites forever and to see this return, the animation being amazing and the surprises from Tite Kubo has made this series my favorite for the year!

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Uzui having three wives.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The eye makeup.

Momo as Dabi (My Hero Academia)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Once I caught up to the episode “Dabi's Dance” I just had to cosplay him! The build-up and energy that Dabi gave was amazing!
What's something you love about this cosplay?
Finding ways to incorporate parts of myself in a cosplay! I love seeing a little bit of me in the characters that I bring to life.
Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
My Hero Academia really stepped it up this season and continues to tell a great story with all of its characters.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Mina is so fun and quirky she reminds me of my own personality. I love My Hero Academia and I wanna see more cosplays of her. She’s so underrated!! Plus I just love pink, ahaha.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The makeup I did! I wasn’t able to do full body paint so I had heavy hot pink blush to match my skin tone with makeup glitter. Also the wig as well!! Mina’s a curly-haired girl
Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
It’s one of my favorite action series right now and the current arc in this season has me on the edge of my seat! I can’t wait to see how this current season ends.

rin as Dabi (My Hero Academia) and Ulquiorra (Bleach)
What inspired you to do these cosplays?
The new season of My Hero Academia coming out inspired me to cosplay everyone’s favorite delinquent. Then, with the return of Bleach, I got inspired to cosplay a fan-favorite character from the past!
What's something you love about these cosplays?
The editing is amazing on Dabi and it makes me appreciate my friend so much more. With Ulquiorra, I love how circular the chest hole was! It was so difficult with a slightly shaky hand but it came out really well (note: be sure to check out the full photo set for Dabi and Ulquiorra).
Why were these your favorite anime of 2022?
I loved watching Dabi’s development in My Hero Academia! With Bleach I feel it has an amazing storyline with multiple characters I can both relate to and be inspired by. It is really a work of art and I love how much depth they give the characters.

Chibith0t as Makima and Power (Chainsaw Man) and Rebecca (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners)
What inspired you to do these cosplays?
I started reading the Chainsaw Man manga and completely fell in love. I love the powerful presence Makima holds and I also love the gremlin energy for both Power and Rebecca. I love cosplaying characters that resonate with me in some way so I can bring them to life easier ^_^
What's something you love about these cosplays?
I love the cinematic feel of the Makima shot! Me and my photographer worked closely to play with lighting to create certain moods. For the Power cosplay, I love the playfulness of my pose, I really feel like I'm channeling her. The Rebecca image I love because we used a cool location to recreate the cyberpunk setting so it really brought the cosplay to life.
Why were these your favorite anime of 2022?
With Chainsaw Man I became absolutely enthralled with the manga and never expected we would get an anime adaption so soon so I was super hype, then it came out and exceeded my expectations! With Cyberpunk: Edgerunners I went into this series with no clue what to expect and the anime completely changed me lol! It had all types of feels and all the action to back it up. I fell in love with all the characters, Rebecca especially!

Sydney as Denji (Chainsaw Man)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I’m always blown away by showstopper huge prop costumes and always wanted to make one, and as the group blood and guts fan and "read the manga" guy, I had no choice but to bring my boy Denji to life.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I love the teeth and gums. The way both of them came out was an accident that ended up looking better than what I had in mind. Also surprisingly I can sorta see out of the helmet albeit not very well (note: be sure to check out the full photo set)
Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
I started reading the manga and said, "No way this is gonna get popular, let alone have an anime. It’s too gory and weird." Then it DID get popular and I was hyped! Then it was announced for an anime and I've never been happier to be wrong.
More people get to see a series I love brought to life complete with countless small references to movies and stuff. The OP slaps and you know a series is gonna be fire when each ending song is different.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I've been a huge fan of the show since I watched the dub every Saturday morning!

What inspired you to do these cosplays?
I’m a huge fan of the manga and wanted to celebrate the release of the anime!

Couldn't wait to see the manga come to life! I was just so unbelievably excited for it.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I saw a lot of myself in Yor, a beautiful kind woman, and what I inspire to be, a strong talented woman.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I feel powerful and beautiful.

This anime brought so many new amazing people into my life. The community and art built off this show was amazing.

Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
The story of Chainsaw Man is a sad story but Denji somehow always looks toward the light one way or another.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I read Chainsaw Man and I really enjoyed watching Denji and seeing what he went through. I think he's great and he deserves the world, so I decided to cosplay my favorite anime main character at the moment.

I honestly don't know what to say. I feel like if you read Chainsaw Man it's so exciting to see those epic panels come to life on screen.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Having long hair, I wanted to try a new cosplay on top of having a new hairstyle and my hair was a perfect match!
What's something you love about this cosplay?

Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
I had been following the manga well before the anime and I just knew the animation would exceed all expectations!

LilChaos as Kurapika (Hunter x Hunter)
NOTE: I know, I know, there was nothing new anime-wise for Hunter x Hunter, but the manga came off hiatus! That definitely counts!
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I wanted to use a natural/protective hairstyle to put my own spin on this character! He's also such a cut-throat icon in the series.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I loved the use of a hairstyle that's not normally displayed in anime characters (note: be sure to check out the full photo set).
Why was this your favorite anime of 2022?
It was my first time watching it and I didn't truly understand the hype of it at first. It wasn't an anime that jumps down your throat with action, but it absolutely told a story and was consistent through its own pacing.
